This month we are offering an unmissable opportunity to see Franco-Haitiano folkloric dances which have developed in eastern Cuba, including dances from the Vodu, Naggo, and Congo traditions.
We have a special guest teacher and performer this month - don't miss this fantastic chance to watch and learn from Manuel Suarez, founder and former director of Havana's 7 Potencias Company, who will be coming from San Francisco to join us at El Rumbon Cubano!
Other performers this month are Yanisel Grenot and Jose David Martinez from Santiago de Cuba, and Daymee Sanz from Havana.
We are also hoping that Jesus Morales Martinez, dancer and singer with Clave y Guaguanco, will have arrived from Havana in time to join us as our second guest teacher and performer.

September 2008 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Classically British ’08 – during Black History Season (BHS) 16 October at The Tabernacle, Notting Hill Classically British is a unique project and powerful annual showcase of modern and classical ballet, which celebrates the talent of Britain’s ballet dancers of ethnic origin. It also allows artists to express global cultures though the language of dance. The project follows the tradition and work of black British ballet dancers and choreographers such as Noel Wallace, Brenda Edwards & Patrick Lewis, Carol Straker, Greta Mendez & The Ballet Nègres – and internationally Arthur Mitchell’s Dance Theatre of Harlem and The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. In 21st century Britain , the event includes neo-classical ballet set to music as diverse as classical, pop, r’n’b, hip-hop, ambient and techno, from professional and upcoming dancers trained at highly reputable schools. Events have been held at the 20th Century Theatre, the home of Ballet Nègres as well as launching BHS at the Mayor of London’s City Hall. The project is the vision of Mark Elie, Artistic Director and Producer, committed to promoting the careers of British dancers of ethnic origin. To celebrate Black History Month, Capoeira Abada UK and Nu Tempo Dance Company will be bringing to London a week long of workshops exploring the African heritage of Brazil. This event will take place in the areas of Greenwich, Islington and Ladbroke Grove.

By way of introduction, my name is Oneil Pryce, and I am a student at Laban currently completing an MA in Dance Choreography. I am a native of Jamaica and a specialist teacher in the area of Caribbean Traditional Dance technique and theory. These techniques range from Jamaican traditional dance forms such as Kumina, Brukins, Gerreh, Jonkanoo to Landship from Barbados, and Bele, which is from the French Caribbean. I also have experience in teaching Caribbean/Afro- contemporary dance technique. The classes at Irie! will be a fusion of these dance styles exploring the rhythmic sensibilities and general principles associated with these forms.As a young choreographer/ teacher I am interested in working with different institutions to develop both my choreographic and teaching skills.

My mission is:
a) To impart both technical and theoretical knowledge of dances of the Caribbean to people of all nationalities and agesb) To foster appreciation of these traditional forms, and c) To help catapult the transition from appreciation to acceptance as part of the international idiom of dance For more information contact IRIE! Feedback33 is a Professional Dancers' Mentoring Forum set up by Sheron Wray.An opportunity to take part in various dance techniques with teachers from around the globe. It is a chance to gain insights into the passions, challenges, and experiences of various artists and teachers.

A "My Space" session held once a month is led by any of the attendees, who will present some contextual information of their work. It is a really useful time to share new ideas, choreography, teaching practice or research with the view of receiving in return some informed, usefully critical feedback, all within a supportive environment.A "My Space" session allows the artist to use the studio space and time of up to 2 hours but it can be as short as 30 minutes - its up to you. Present some work in whatever medium of artistic dance expression they envisage. The person calling the "My Space session," must be registered; for only £5 this gives you use of unlimited registration with the group and £3 for classes there after.

This months "My Space session" will be taught by Iris De Brito & Zela Gayle using their combined knowledge and experience of AFRO-CUBAN FOLKLORIC Dance Forms an introduction to the Intermediate course starting on Monday 22nd September.

BiographiesIris De Brito teaches in the UK and internationally. She is originally from Angola, a country in the south west of Africa. Trained at "The London Studio Centre" and with the late William Louther (one of the original members of the Alvin Ailey company. Iris has also worked with "Badejo Arts" and "Kokuma Dance Company". Iris is trained in Jazz/Contemporary/ Street Dance & Salsa Dance. Zela Gayle began dancing at the age of 5 in Jamaica, learning Afro-Caribbean dance as well as classical ballet. She continued her training in Contemporary and Jazz dance at WAC Performing Arts and Media college. Furthering her higher education in dance, she achieved a BA Hons in Dance Studies at Winchester University. Establishing herself as an international artist, her experience includes choreography for Crystal Lights Dance Academy in St Lucia, teaching Afro-Cuban dance at the Edna Manley School of Jamaica and lecturer in dance at the University of Winchester in the UK. Zela's professional development has included working with Bonnie Oddie,(U.K) Patsy Ricketts,(J. A) Sheron Wray,(UK) Jackie Guy,(UK) Alfredo Valasquez,(CU) Lola Adodo (UK) and Maya Yoshida(JPN) . This course aims to provide students with a deeper understanding of Afro- Cuban rhythms, their influence in Salsa as well as the roots and influence of African dance in Cuban rhythms.

This course will be taught by Iris De Brito & Zela Gayle. The combined knowledge and experience of these two teachers will provide for a class full of energy, history, and detailed explanation. Biographies
Iris De Brito teaches in the UK and internationally. She's originally from Angola, a country in the south west of Africa. Trained at "The London Studio Centre" and with the late William Louther (one of the original members of the Alvin Ailey company. Iris has also worked with "Badejo Arts" and "Kokuma Dance Company". Iris is trained in Jazz/Contemporary/ Street Dance & Salsa Dance.

“I believe you can't put me in a box. I've enjoyed learning and performing to different styles in Dance in my career so far and have used all these influences in my movement expression. Perhaps my mixed heritage has reflected greatly in my Dance interpretation. Society's multicultural background has clearly mirrored why the appeal of Salsa Dance & Music is not just a fashion fad. Meanwhile, Dance is still evolving and styles evolve with it. I'd like to share my knowledge through my work and hopefully add a valuable contribution to Dance in the UK whilst inspiring others".

Zela Gayle began dancing at the age of 5 in Jamaica, learning Afro-Caribbean dance as well as classical ballet. She continued her training in Contemporary and Jazz dance at WAC Performing Arts and Media college. Furthering her higher education in dance, she achieved a BA Hons in Dance Studies at Winchester University.
In 2004 after working with several youth groups in the UK; Zela joined Danza Libre Company in Cuba to launch her professional dance career focusing on Afro-Cuban dance forms.Establishing herself as an international artist, her experience includes choreography for Crystal Lights Dance Academy in St Lucia, teaching Afro-Cuban dance at the Edna Manley School of Jamaica and lecturer in dance at the University of Winchester in the UK. Zela's professional development has included working with Bonnie Oddie,(U.K) Patsy Ricketts,(J. A) Sheron Wray,(UK) Jackie Guy,(UK) Alfredo Valasquez,(CU) Lola Adodo (UK) and Maya Yoshida(JPN) . Currently improving her skills in networking Zela has established herself as co-ordinator of Feedback33 Mentoring Forum for professional dancers and teachers in the UK.
Now pursuing a solo dance career teaching and performing internationally, she draws from a wide range of influences such as; traditional Afro-Cuban dance, Caribbean fusion, Contemporary and improvisational techniques.

Mama Adelle from Senegal will deliver two, 2 hour Sabar workshops, on Friday 10 October 2008 with Feedback 33 Forum and Sunday 12 October 2008 at 14:00 - 16:00 @ Yaa Assantewa Community Centre, 1 Chippenham Mews, W9 2AN, Tube: Westbourne Grove, Royal Oak. A former dancer with the Ballet National de Senegal and with Ballet Bougarabou, Mama Adelle has taught African dance in Europe, the USA and Scandinavia for over 27 years. In 1991, Mama Adelle established Companie Niaba, and earlier this year organised the first Tanaber (a Senegalese dance event) in Paris, which was a great success. As well as being renowned for the teaching of Sabar, the national social dance of Senegal, Mama Adelle is an expert teacher in numerous dance forms from Senegal, Guinea and Mali. Mama Adelle is well known in the dance community for her passion and wealth of knowledge, and we are very lucky to have secured someone with such a wealth of knowledge in African dance and culture to teach this workshop. What's Happening?
On Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September the V&A are proud to be hosting the British Caribbean Association's (BCA) 50th Anniversary (1958 - 2008) event: GENERATION to GENERATION which attempts to explore and celebrate aspects of British Caribbean History.

The weekend hosts a conference with David Lammy delivering the inaugural Lord Pitt Lecture, speakers discussing cultural and social issues affecting British Caribbean people today, an exhibition of Britain's public services within the last 50 years, a tour of African and West Indian objects within the museum's collection and the first Caribbean Film Festival UK with talks, screenings and Q&A facilitated by actor Jeff Francis currently in Ashes to Ashes, BBC1 and formally of Desmonds, Channel 4. Books and commemorative resources will be on sale.

Eckhard Thiemann has over 15 years experience as a successful international arts manager, working mainly but not exclusively in dance. His expertise ranges from developing ambitious international artistic programmes to organisational development, business planning and fundraising. He works closely with partners and artists to identify local needs and audiences and develop innovative strategies and projects to connect artistic creativity with local people and contexts.

Dear Members Forum member Carolyn Lilly has kindly arranged for us, for Mama Adelle from Senegal to deliver a 2 hour Sabar workshop on Friday 10 October 2008. A former dancer with the Ballet National de Senegal and with Ballet Bougarabou, Mama Adelle has taught African dance in Europe, the USA and Scandinavia for over 27 years. In 1991, Mama Adelle established Companie Niaba, and earlier this year organised the first Tanaber (a Senegalese dance event) in Paris, which was a great success. As well as being renowned for the teaching of Sabar, the national social dance of Senegal, Mama Adelle is an expert teacher in numerous dance forms from Senegal, Guinea and Mali. Mama Adelle is well known in the dance community for her passion and wealth of knowledge, and we are very lucky to have secured someone with such a wealth of knowledge in African dance and culture to teach this workshop.
