Caribbean is home to a rich array of dance forms and rhythms, which gives it that extraordinary, unique flavour that we love so much. The rhythmic body movement and musical interpretation that is typical of Caribbean dances leaves us so inspired that we want to learn how to move like that.

Island Echoes will be hosted in a beautiful dance studio at Moonshot Centre, an amazing cultural space located in the middle of Fordham Park in New Cross.

Over the course of the three days, you will learn the following Caribbean dance styles: Congo Bele (Trinidad), Pique ( Grenada ), Yanvalou ( Haiti ), Dinkimini, Revival, Zella, Gerreh, Jonkoonu, Ettu, Brukins and Mento ( Jamaica ), Punta (St. Vincent), Landship ( Barbados )
About the teacher – Oniel Pryce
A native of Jamaica , Oniel graduated from The Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts School of Dance in 2001. He went on to graduate from The State University of New York and most recently completed a Masters in Choreography at LABAN. A member of the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica since 2004, he has played roles as dancer and choreographer, and has lectured in Caribbean Traditional Dance technique and theory at The Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. His extensive knowledge of Caribbean traditional dance makes him the perfect ‘pilot’ to take you on this journey.

Class is suitable for everyone with an interest in Caribbean traditional dance. From beginner to advanced. Just come with the willingness to have fun and be challenged.

In the 1920’s many African-American artists and intellectuals distanced themselves
from the styles of Europeans and white Americans and asserted their freedom to
express themselves celebrating a black dignity and creativity that had emerged out
of slavery and their cultural ties to Africa . The Harlem Renaissance also influenced
many French-speaking black writers from African and Caribbean colonies who lived
in Paris, and British speaking West Indians and Africans based in the UK . In the
1980’s, many of the original protagonists resurfaced in London ; tap dancers were
courted as part of a Jazz revival; Elizabeth Welch recorded ‘Stormy Weather’ for
Derek Jarman’s film ‘The Tempest’ and the American born British Jazz singer
Adelaide Hall (1901-1993) still holds the world record for ‘most enduring recording
artist’. The Riverside Studios in London hosted much of this ‘80’s revival and this
exhibition originates in the archive of the then artistic director there, David Gothard.

Mamela Nyamza – a native of South Africa , Mamela is an international dancer, teacher and choreographer with over 12 years of experience. Trained in ballet and contemporary at the Pretoria Tchnikon, Pact Dance Company and the Alvin Ailey School , Mamela’s career began in 1997 in South Africa where she danced with both the Pact Dance Company and with the State Theatre Dance Company. As per for mer, Mamela has toured extensively worldwide in various productions including The Lion King ( Netherlands ) and We Will Rock You ( South Africa ). She has taught and choreographed for schools, dance companies and commercial clients including: the Zama Dance School , Jazzart Dance Theatre, and “So You Think You Can Dance” ( South Africa ). In 2008, Mamela was invited as South Africa ’s representative to present her Afrofusion technique at the “Superstars of Dance” in the USA . Presently, Mamela is project coordinator for the University of Stellenbosch ’s Project Move 1524. Project Move 1524 uses a dynamic interpersonal approach to address and educate on, via dance movement therapy, social issues ranging from HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, through to drugs etc.

Cuban fever hits London this summer as Havana Cultura supports a series of events taking place in June and July at the Barbican Centre. Havana Cultura is a cultural initiative developed by Havana Club. It aims at increasing the visibility of emerging Cuban artists. This summer events form part of this year’s Cuba50 programme.
Events include exclusive performances from some of the world’s best musicians flown in straight from Cuba, groundbreaking Cuban films during the Cine Cuba festival, free performances in the public spaces of the Barbican and free cocktail classes by Havana Club’s top Mixologists.
The Havana Cultura initiative is the first of its kind to profile artists from all disciplines, including musicians, visual artists, dancers, performers and writers raising awareness of contemporary art and culture of the city of Havana. Havana-Cultura provides the artists living in Havana a chance to showcase their work, energy and passion to the world and encourages people to explore the talent, vibrancy and modernity Havana has to offer.

FEEDBACK33 TEACHER'S BIOGRAPHY
Oniel Pryce – a native of Jamaica, graduate of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts School of Dance (2001) with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Diploma in Dance Education from The State University of New York, College of Brockport (2003), Oniel has recently completed a Masters in Choreography at Laban (2008). A member of the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica, which he joined in 2001, since 2004 Oniel has played dual roles as a dancer/choreographe r with the company. Mr Pryce has lectured in Caribbean traditional dance technique and theory at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts School of Dance, and has also worked as a freelance choreographer with other dance companies in Jamaica..
A specialist teacher in the area of Caribbean traditional dance technique and theory, Oniel’s mission is to a) impart both technical and theoretical knowledge of dances of the Caribbean to people of all nationalities and ages, b) to foster appreciation of these traditional forms, and c) to help catapult the transition from appreciation to acceptance as part of the international idiom of dance.

Urdang Academy Suspended for 3 Weeks. Back on 15th July with New Format!
The lessons @ Urdang Academy have been suspended from this week and will be re-starting on the 15th July. We will re-start with a new format as follows: The class will last for an hour and a half starting at 7pm and finishing at 8.30pm.
Everyone will have the opportunity to practise from 8.30pm till 9pm. There will be four levels with 4 different teachers!!

Issa Sawane is an inspiring teacher from Casamance, Senegal. As a choreographer and performer he has impressed audiences with his dynamic appearances in Senegal, and the UK, including at Tribe of Doris, Womad Festival, and African Village Festival.
During this 3-hour workshop, Issa and his musicians will be drawing from their wealth of knowledge of the dances, rhythms and songs from Mandinka traditions of West Africa (dances include Jambadon, Nyarga, Ekonkon, Lenje, Mbara and kumpo) to give us an unforgettable experience of Senegalese culture.

The documentary film A Cidade das Mulheres (The City of Women) directed by Lazaro Faria, presents an intimate view of African religious traditions in Bahia, Brazil. It features Mae Stella de Oxossi, perhaps the most influential figure in Bahia’s Candomble community. Mae Stella is the head priestess from Axe Opo Afonja, founded in 1910 and is one of the most important “terreiros” (African spiritual communities) in Salvador, Bahia. In the film Mae Stella explains from a feminine perspective, the history of Candomble in Bahia, and the matriarchal system of power created and controlled by the women who practice these traditions. Issa Sawane comes from Casamance, Senegal. Issa has a wealth of knowledge of the dances, rhythms and songs from Mandinka traditions of West Africa. These dances, music and song stem from deep Seruba traditions. Seruba rhythms are played on three drums by three different players. The dances are Jambadon, Nyarga, Ekonkon, Lenje, Mbara and kumpo and are performed at different types of celebrations and rites of passage. In experiencing his teaching, people will gain the full flavour of the traditional Senegalese dance expression.
Issa is an inspiring, individual teacher and as a choreographer and performer has impressed audiences with his dynamic appearances in Senegal and the UK (Tribe of Doris, Womad Festival, African Village Festival, Edinburgh, Malcolm X Bristol, Pax Productions, St. Pauls Carnival, Bristol, Reading Theatre, MTV, Drum Camp, International Youth Festival, Aberdeen), together with his expressive, virtuoso, colourful dance and rhythm.

FEEDBACK33 TEACHER'S BIOGRAPHY
Jackie Guy, teacher, researcher, lecturer in African and Caribbean dance forms, has more than 35 years experience as an Educator, Performer, Choreographer and Artistic Director. He fuses authentic traditional dance vocabulary with modern/contemporary dance techniques to develop a unique style, which he has used for 18 years with the Dance Society at the University of the West Indies (UWI) and other groups.
Trained in Jamaica by Alma MockYen C.D. in Folk and Modern dance he later became a full-time member of the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica (NDTC) performing and touring with them throughout the world for 15 years. He currently choreographs for the Movements Dance Company of Jamaica and retains his position as the Artistic Director of the UWI Dance Society mentioned above. Since re-locating to England in 1987, Guy led the Kokuma Dance Theatre Company, which under his Directorship (1988 – 1995) won the Black Dance award for Production and Choreography and the Prudential Commendation Award for Excellence, Innovation, and Creativity. Mr Guy choreographed the stage musical version of the iconic movie The Harder They Come, a production that created history as the first Jamaican Musical to be presented in London’s West End.
Jackie Guy is available to conduct Lectures, Master Classes, Workshops, and collaborative initiatives that involve dance.
The Session is an evening of dance performance that brings the rituals and ceremonies of our ancient African ancestors to the complexities of modern life todayusing dances that move to rhythms from contemporary composers who embrace an African heritage with a vision for re-interpretation for the future.

The Association of Dance of the African Diaspora (ADAD) invites applications for its Professional Development Fellowship
We are very pleased to announce that in October 2009, the Association of Dance of the African Diaspora (ADAD) will provide four new fellowships of £2000. These fellowships are available to dance artists working in dance for ms of the African Diaspora, to develop their careers. The bursaries can be used to contribute to the cost of classes, training, equipment, research trips and other professional development needs. Fellows will be assigned a mentor and follow a self-directed programme of professional development for a period of one year.

The Trailblazers fellowships are open to UK-based dance artists working in dance forms with origins in or significant influences from African, Caribbean , “Black” British or African-American dance forms, including jazz and street dance. Applicants should have some professional experience as a dancer, choreographer or artistic director, and can be at any stage of their career. They must also be a member of a professional organisation such as Dance UK/ADAD, Foundation for Community Dance, Society for Dance Research or National Dance Teachers Association.

Bf & She Was A Knife Thrower’s Assistant are two powerful dance duets that explore how we communicate with our bodies through different physicalities, cultural histories and ethnicity. The duets – one male, the other female - present examples of artistic collaborations between artists from different backgrounds, shedding lights on issues of identity, friendship and personal risk-taking.
Freddie Opoku-Addaie and Jorge Crecis present BfTwo men trapped in an unknown game of power, dominance and perseverance, yet seeking for company and communication. Bf explores the quest for a shared existence in the face of the essential loneliness of the individual and the difficulty of communication.

FEEDBACK33 TEACHER'S BIOGRAPHY
Sheron Wray is an artist whose primary focus is dance. This is often in conjunction with other creative forces, music and technology being key. She is a choreographer, dancer and researcher who takes an exceptional interest in Jazz as a fuelling agent to developing her work and philosophy. For over 10 years she danced with the UK's leading Contemporary Dance Company's Rambert and "London Contemporary Dance Theatre". In tandem with this activity, she began creating her own work and in the summer of 1992, JazzXchange Music and Dance Company was formed. During the company's first 10 years she created work with Wynton Marsalis, Byron Wallen, Julian Joseph, Gary Crosby (Jazz Jamaica), and Derek Bermel. She also made a guest appearance with Bobby McFerrin.
In community arts settings she has collaborated with the London Musici Orchestra, the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, for the Millennium celebrations she was commissioned to choreograph the Carnival for the Opening Ceremony at the Dome with designer and producer Keith Khan, created for 300 people. In 2000 Sheron became one of the first Artists - in - Residence at the Royal Opera House. Internationally collaborations have included New York contemporary music group TONK, Tumbuka Dance Company Zimbabwe , Filipino National Commission on Culture and Arts. She has also taught and choreographed in Argentina , Italy, USA, Holland, Cuba and Germany. In Britain, Sheron teaches and choreographs for a number of institutions including the, London Contemporary Dance School, Middlesex University, London Studio Centre, Rambert Dance Company, Royal Ballet School, Dance Arts International, New Adventures and Union. She contributes articles for dance based publications and is often invited to present and chair discussions at Seminars and Conferences.
One of the co-founders of ADAD (Association of Dance of the African Diaspora), an organisation dedicated to dissemination and highlighting of work created from an Africanist perspective; Sheron is also the custodian of a seminal work Harmonica Breakdown and is the artist who is depicted in the film of this classic work choreographed by Jane Dudley.

The Association of Dance of the African Diaspora (ADAD) invites applications for its Professional Development Fellowship
We are very pleased to announce that in October 2009, the Association of Dance of the African Diaspora (ADAD) will provide four new fellowships of £2000. These fellowships are available to dance artists working in dance for ms of the African Diaspora, to develop their careers. The bursaries can be used to contribute to the cost of classes, training, equipment, research trips and other professional development needs. Fellows will be assigned a mentor and follow a self-directed programme of professional development for a period of one year.
Criteria
The Trailblazers fellowships are open to UK-based dance artists working in dance forms with origins in or significant influences from African, Caribbean , “Black” British or African-American dance forms, including jazz and street dance. Applicants should have some professional experience as a dancer, choreographer or artistic director, and can be at any stage of their career. They must also be a member of a professional organisation such as Dance UK/ADAD, Foundation for Community Dance, Society for Dance Research or National Dance Teachers Association.

Bf & She Was A Knife Thrower’s Assistant are two powerful dance duets that explore how we communicate with our bodies through different physicalities, cultural histories and ethnicity. The duets – one male, the other female - present examples of artistic collaborations between artists from different backgrounds, shedding lights on issues of identity, friendship and personal risk-taking.
Freddie Opoku-Addaie and Jorge Crecis present BfTwo men trapped in an unknown game of power, dominance and perseverance, yet seeking for company and communication. Bf explores the quest for a shared existence in the face of the essential loneliness of the individual and the difficulty of communication.
girl jonah presents the duet She was a Knife Thrower’s AssistantWith artful use of choreography, singing and spoken text this gently provocative work brings to the stage a brief picture of a woman who it seems could be waiting backstage, reflecting on the risks we all take and wondering how we can ever be sure where danger is most likely to come from.

FEEDBACK33 TEACHER'S BIOGRAPHY
Sheron Wray is an artist whose primary focus is dance. This is often in conjunction with other creative forces, music and technology being key. She is a choreographer, dancer and researcher who takes an exceptional interest in Jazz as a fuelling agent to developing her work and philosophy. For over 10 years she danced with the UK's leading Contemporary Dance Company's Rambert and "London Contemporary Dance Theatre". In tandem with this activity, she began creating her own work and in the summer of 1992, JazzXchange Music and Dance Company was formed. During the company's first 10 years she created work with Wynton Marsalis, Byron Wallen, Julian Joseph, Gary Crosby (Jazz Jamaica), and Derek Bermel. She also made a guest appearance with Bobby McFerrin.
In community arts settings she has collaborated with the London Musici Orchestra, the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, for the Millennium celebrations she was commissioned to choreograph the Carnival for the Opening Ceremony at the Dome with designer and producer Keith Khan, created for 300 people. In 2000 Sheron became one of the first Artists - in - Residence at the Royal Opera House. Internationally collaborations have included New York contemporary music group TONK, Tumbuka Dance Company Zimbabwe , Filipino National Commission on Culture and Arts. She has also taught and choreographed in Argentina , Italy, USA, Holland, Cuba and Germany. In Britain, Sheron teaches and choreographs for a number of institutions including the, London Contemporary Dance School, Middlesex University, London Studio Centre, Rambert Dance Company, Royal Ballet School, Dance Arts International, New Adventures and Union. She contributes articles for dance based publications and is often invited to present and chair discussions at Seminars and Conferences.
One of the co-founders of ADAD (Association of Dance of the African Diaspora), an organisation dedicated to dissemination and highlighting of work created from an Africanist perspective; Sheron is also the custodian of a seminal work Harmonica Breakdown and is the artist who is depicted in the film of this classic work choreographed by Jane Dudley.

Marketing workshops were held as part of the Harare Intern ational Festival of the Arts (HIFA) at the Book Café, a well-known cultural hub in Harare . About 35 delegates representing nine SADC gathered over two days to discuss the building of regional arts markets, share best practice arts marketing experience, learn from each other and work towards developing an Arts Marketing Toolkit.
