A well performed year!

2010 has just began leaving behind some intense moments of dance at the Ecole des Sables: two very important trainings, the re-creation of the Opera du Sahel, the touring of Waxtaan in Europe and many other things.

April 6 to Mai 30, 2009
CHOREOGRAPHIC TOOLS WORKSHOP
During two months, the project brought together about twenty young African choreographers. They explored the techniques of creation and choreographic language with international choreographers. Thanks to this training, the dancers-choreograph ers were able to refine their artistic approach, firmly building the dynamics to which the African choreographic creation has been committed.

July 13 to August 29, 2009
INTERNATIONAL PROFESSIONNAL TRAINING « A NEW STEP »

After a first and successful experience in 2007, the Ecole des Sables chose to continue its training program for professional dancers from all over the world in traditional and contemporary African dances.

Thus, from July 13 to August 29, 2009, it welcomed 43 dancers from all over the world, among whom 16 Africans, having already received training at the Ecole des Sables, and 27 from other continents.

To be considered: three generations of African choreographers and teachers came together at this occasion and shared their knowledge with the participants: Germaine Acogny (Senegal / France), Irene Tassembedo (Burkina Faso) and Patrick Acogny (Senegal / France). Their connection dates from the Mudra Afrique time.
Ciré Bèye (Senegal), Bertrand Saki (Ivory Coast), Benjamin Lamarche (France), Nora Chipaumire (Zimbabwe/USA) and Souleymane Badolo (Burkina Faso) also contributed with their expertise.

An opportunity to discover the richness, variety, complexity and specific energy of traditional and contemporary African dances and to enable beautiful meetings, links and exchanges between dancers coming from various horizons.

THE SAHEL OPERA
It is in a new form that Bintou Wéré, “a Sahel Opera” went on a one-month African tour. In fact, the artists met up at Toubab Dialaw to restage this unique play initiated and supported by the Prince Claus Fund. The rehearsals took place first at the Ecole des Sables, then in Bamako. Due to the combined efforts of the Ministry of Culture in Mali and the Prince Claus Fund, the tour began on October 30th in the Malian capital. On-stage for this African lyrical work, about forty singers, musicians, dancers under the artistic direction of Wasis Diop, Jean Pierre direction, and Germaine Acogny and Flora Théfaine choreography.

WAXTAAN
The Jant-Bi Company presented at several occasions the choreography “Waxtaan” in Europe. As usual, it was received by an enthusiastic public and obtained a great success in 2009. Croatia, Madrid (Spain) in July, Lisbon (Portugal) in August, Murcia (Spain) in November, La Reunion (France) at the beginning of December, and Hamburg (Germany) in the middle of December.
THE SCALES OF MEMORY
“The scales of the memory” results from a collaboration between Jawole Willa Jo Zollar (United States) and Germaine Acogny (France / Senegal) and their respective companies - 7 women of the Urban Bush Women from New York and 7 men of the Jant-Bi Company. The work addresses the themes of memory, resistance, love and show the links between African-Americans and Africans.
In 2009, it was performed in Germany and in the USA and obtained an enormous success.
In 2010, an important European tour will be organised.

DANCE AT SCHOOL
This project, set up since 2008, involves about 80 children of the village of Toubab Dialaw coming to the Ecole des Sables where they receive a weekly training program in dance, among which Germaine Acogny’s techniques.

WOMEN PROJECT
Give to women their place in the field of the contemporary dance in Senegal and in Africa by encouraging feminine creativity and the emergence of women choreographers. Several trainings of Senegalese women dancers took place in 2009 and more are planned in 2010 at the Ecole des Sables for that purpose.

GERMAINE IN NEW YORK
Invited by 651 ARTS which headquarters are located in Brooklyn, New York, Germaine Acogny performed within the framework of 'FLY, Five First Ladies of Dance', a project bringing together 4 famous African American choreographers Bebe Miller, Carmen de Lavallade, Jawole Zollar and Dianne Mc Intyre plus Germaine representing Africa.

Miscellaneous
Congratulations to Wesley Ruzibiza and his company, «Sabliste » since 2008, who was awarded with the silver medal at the 2009 Francophony Games, in the Dance category!
Again some nice projects for 2010
January/February, a Transmission Workshop of the Germaine Acogny Technique (by Germaine Acogny), April/July an important 3 months training for African and African Diaspora choreographers and dancers, residencies, "Scales of Memory" tour of the Jant-Bi Company and Urban Bush Women. Once again, a year during which the African dance will be strong and beautiful!

The German Dance Magazine “Balletanz” has published a very nice, sensitive, analytic article about the work of L’Ecole des Sables and its artistic director Germaine Acogny. Journalist Renate Klett
