The Afro-Latin Lounge

Hi,

It's now just over 2 weeks until the Mostly Jazz Festival (3rd & 4th July in Birmingham).

The main line-up features headline performances from pioneering jazz orchestra the Sun Ra Arkestra and Courtney Pine, as well as Quantic and his Combo Barbaro, Cymande II, James Taylor Quartet, and Sebastian Rochford's Polar Bear (not to be confused with the performance poet, this is the jazz band that are a firm favourite with Jools Holland).

Since the initial line-up release we've managed to add lots more to the bill:
Craig Charles, presenter of the BBC 6 Music's Funk and Soul Show, has leant his support to the festival team and will be leading the proceedings on Saturday 3rd July as festival compere and DJing at the official after party.
We've added a 3rd stage (the Swing Meadow Stage) which will feature spoken word performances from nationally renowned Polarbear (http://www.homeofpolar.com/), previous Birmingham poet laureate Dreadlockalien (http://www.dreadlockalien.co.uk/) and award winning poet Luke Kennard amongst other rising talents. They will be performing amidst special screenings of artist films and artist Q&A sessions.
In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Gypsy jazz legend Django Reinhardt we've programmed part of the Sunday bill in dedication to him. This will include a performance from the Gary Potter Trio. Gary is generally considered the UK's leading Gypsy jazz guitarist.
This is an open air city festival taking place in Birmingham's Moseley Park.

I have attached some further information.

Best wishes,
Charlotte Payne

Time Out London Critics’ choice:Mémoire by Sammy Baloji at Dilston Grove 2 June – 4 July 2010Film and photographic installationCGP London, in partnership with Autograph ABP, is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition in the UK of Congolese photographer and filmmaker Sammy Baloji in the newly renovated Dilston Grove. Mémoire is an artist film addressing colonial violence, shattered dreams of independence and the postcolonial political fallout that exists within the current Democratic Republic of Congo. Mémoire is a beautifully crafted and abstracted artists video shot in collaboration with the fellow Congolese performance artist Faustin Linyekula. Alongside Mémoire, Autograph ABP have commissioned Baloji to make a new large-scale photographic work that will document the exact site of Patrice Lumumba’s assassination in January 1961.Sammy Baloji’s work shines a powerful spotlight on contemporary Congolese reality. It interrogates the abuse of power and its legacy, revealing the devastating impact that exploitative cultures have on both society and the environment. It calls for greater awareness of the local consequences of ‘development’ and highlights the rights of local people. Baloji creates videos that investigate the body, and, despite restrictions on photographing public sites, he produces images of the Congo ’s urban architecture. His work raises social consciousness and stimulates artistic development in the Katanga region, a locus for colonial and post-colonial exploitation of its wealth of minerals essential for Western technologies. This exhibition was part commissioned by Autograph ABP and is accompanied by an artist’s book available during the exhibition. The staging of Mémoire is supported by the Goethe Institute in Nairobi , Kenya .Venue: Dilston Grove, Southwest corner of Southwark Park , London SE16 2DD Travel: Jubilee Line and buses to Canada Water Exhibition: 2 June – 4 July 2010 Open: Wed – Sun from 12 – 6pm www.cafegalleryproj ects.com‘After two years closure and a £870,000 renovation project, Dilston Grove reopens with a mesmerising installation.’ Telegraph, 01 June 2010Emma BoydAutograph ABP CoordinatorRivington Place London EC2A 3BA Mob: 07734682239T +44 (0)20 7749 1266 F +44 (0)20 7739 8748 E emma@autograph- abp.co.uk W www.autograph- abp.co.uk/Follow Autograph on Twitter http://www.twitter.com/AutographABPEVENTS2 June – 4 July 2010 – Sammy Baloji – Memoiré – Dilston Grove Gallery, Southwark Park , London8 June 2010 – Zanele Muholi In Conversation talk 7:00pm at Rivington Place , London 17 September – 21 November - Ever Young: Retrospective Exhibition of Photographs by James Barnor6 October – 21 November 2010 - Du Bois, Thomas J Calloway and the Paris Albums 1900Rivington Place - the new home for Autograph ABP http://www.rivingtonplace.org/ Autograph ABP is a charity that works internationally to educate the public in photography, with a particular emphasis on issues of cultural identity and human rights. An opportunity to take part in various dance techniques with teachers from around the globe. It is a chance to gain insights into the passions, challenges, and experiences of various artists and teachers.

Venue: The London Studio Centre, 42-50 York Way (adjacent to Lincoln Lounge), London N1 9AB

Time: 7pm – 9pm (registration: 7pm -7.30pm; class 7.30pm – 9pm)

Contemporary workshop with Akosua Boakye, Thursday 10 June 10 2010, 7.30-9.00pm.

Akosua’s Contemporary dance draws from diverse movement styles, culture, every day behavior and influences of music. Her classes introduce and support participants to develop some of the technical and aesthetic values that shape western dance forms with traces of African dance. The dancer develops the basic physical and interpretative skills required for contemporary dance. An emphasis is placed on the precise relationship between body parts and the energy of performance. The class begins with a warm up. It continues with centre exercises and travelling phases before building physical and interpretative skills through a dance combination in which the dancer displays both freedom and control.
