FILM SCREENING: Cuba! Africa! Revolution! part 2

At the Hobgoblin Pub,
73 White Lion Street,
Islington,
London, N1
(PLEASE NOTE VENUE CHANGE)

SYNOPSIS: In January of 1961 independence fighter and Congo’s first Prime
Minister, Patrice Lumumba was assassinated. The Cuban revolutionary government
recognised this as part of imperialism’s drive to turn back the tide of
African independence. Shortly after, Cuba’s ‘African Odyssey’ began. The
necessary technical and military assistance socialist Cuba provided for
liberation movements Algeria, Guinea Bissau, Angola, Mozambique, Namibia, and
South Africa, made the difference between defeat and victory.

This documentary, produced for the BBC in April of 2007, has rare footage of
some of Africa’s most prominent revolutionaries and tracks Cuba’s heroic
and unselfish contribution to the fight against colonialism and racist
oppression in Africa.

Each screening is followed by an open discussion of the issues raised

Dwayne’s class is a fast paced Cuban technique class merging elements of la technica Cubana with his own unique contemporary flavour. The class is highly physical with challenging exercises in the centre and travelling sequences that demand a sense of attack and musical dynamism. The class will culminate in a challenging movement sequence to end.

Participants will gain new techniques for handling poly-movement which characterise many African and Caribbean dance forms. This workshop will conclude with a 15 minute Q & A session.

Newvolutions - artist call

Wed 03 - Sat 21 January 2012

Calling all artists, dancers and theatre makers!

This coming new year Lincoln Performing Arts Centre is hosting the first event in its Newvolutions programme; an exciting way of nurturing new performance in Lincolnshire .

Newvolutions aims to support new and established practitioners working across different art forms in Lincolnshire and the wider region through work-in-progress presentations.

Throughout January LPAC will open up its spaces, resources and support to a select number of performing arts creatives so that you can have the freedom and room to experiment and evolve new ideas before testing them out on an audience.
Following this developmental period a series of final 'scratch'/work-in-progress performances will take place over four days between 18-21 January in a creative, informal atmosphere.
If you have the embryo of a show that you want to test or an innovative new idea that needs some space to develop, please submit a short proposal (no more than two sides of A4), outlining a synopsis of what you want to explore, what you hope to discover through the process, why this initiative is right for you and what sort of support you might need (level of rehearsal time, access to performers/technicians etc), and email Artistic Director Craig Morrow - cmorrow@lincoln.ac.uk <mailto:cmorrow@lincoln.ac.uk> - by 9 November 2011

Cuban Contemporary Dance with Shelly Maxwell, Thursday 17 November, 7.30pm – 9pm (class registration 7pm – 7.25pm)

The class culminating in a challenging movement sequence to end.

With a nod to Billy Wilder’s much loved film and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, Some Like it Hip Hop is a comical tale of love, mistaken identity, cross-dressing and revolution; all played out in ZooNation’s trademark style of hip hop, comedy and physical theatre.

Directed by Kate Prince, with original music by Josh Cohen and DJ Walde, the all star cast includes Tommy Franzén (So You Think You Can Dance, Blaze, Goldberg) Lizzie Gough (So You Think You Can Dance, Blaze) and Teneisha Bonner (Into the Hoods, Insane in the Brain, StreetDance 3D, Shoes).

ZooNation Dance Company was founded in 2002 by Kate Prince. In 2006, the company premiered Into the Hoods, which went on to become the longest running dance show the West End has ever seen. In 2010 ZooNation became a Resident Company at Sadler’s Wells, and Kate Prince became an Associate Artist.

The Afro-Latin Lounge

Hi Y'all

Sorry for the group email..........As you may know we have recently started a new project Orchestra Bombo. This is a project we would like to grow and grow by bringing in dancers, singers and more horn players, not to mention setting up gigs etc...., but realistically we don’t have the manpower to administrate it.

We would also like to keep the Rumbas in Kings Cross going which include very affordable workshops but this is in danger of being dropped because we are unfunded and seriously understaffed.

So.....if you have an interest in these projects continuing and have the odd spare hour and would like to help these are some of the things you could do:

· Updating of social networking, spreading the word
· Documenting events with film & photography and uploading on to website/social network
· Setting up Google calendar for group members (Orchestra Bombo)
· On site help, collecting email addresses, taking money, overall help with running of event
· Updating newsletter and emails
· Contacting promoters for gigs or Rumba events

If you would like to chat in more detail about any of the above please give me a call on 07538682180.

Thanks for your support so far!

Dear ADAD

On Wednesday 26th October 2011, Enigma Dance Company will be staging an exciting new piece of hip-hop theatre, Far from the NORM; an exploration into individuality and conformity. The production is choreographed by myself, Botis Seva and includes three pieces of work each exploring a different theme; Confinement, No Escape and Freedom. As a young aspiring choreographer I would really value your attendance at this event and any feedback or advice you can offer.

Enigma Dance Company was established in 2009 by myself and my co-director Sharlene Carter. We had the vision of bringing high-quality and low cost dance opportunities to our home borough of Barking and Dagenham. We aim to produce innovative and exciting work which explores issues such as selfhood and social conformity. I want to take audiences on a journey through abstract, contemporary and hip hop dance that causes them to question and challenge both their own and society’s norms. I aspire to push the boundaries of the art form and be recognized for innovation and expressivity.

EVENT 2

The Colored Museum is a thought-provoking, satirical show that has
delighted and discomforted audiences since it was written by George C.
Wolfe in America in 1986.

Taking place in a cultural museum, the 11 living 'exhibits' explore
African-American identity in an exhibition of stereotypes.

Through characters like the pert and ever-smiling Miss Pat, airline
hostess for Celebrity Slaveship, and The Man, a successful businessman
who only wants to be Black at the weekend, Wolfe confronts history and
clichés with gutsy humour. By retiring these 11 stereotypical characters
and attitudes to a museum, he makes room for the future; for new stories
and ideas.

Provocative and seriously funny, The Colored Museum will stir your
emotions and leave you in stitches.
