TRIBE OF DORIS 2011

Many Cultures, One Race

The intercultural summer school, festival and global jamboree returns
9th–14th August - Black Down Hills, Devon

The world’s most vibrant intercultural exchange of acoustic music, dance, song and ceremony returns to its beautiful Devon site once again for its 19th year from Tuesday 9th till Sunday 14th August with a tantalising new line up of workshops and performances, featuring teachers from all pockets of the globe.

This year’s African highlights include renowned polyphonic singer Anita Deaulne of Zap Mama fame; authentic Moroccan Gnawa trance musicians and dancers, Jil Gnawa; African dance and drum legend Nii Tagoe from Baka Beyond; Senegalese drummer Seckou Keita, celebrated African dance teacher Idrissa Camara and Dr Olu Taiwo leading Animal Spirit Dance.

As ever, learning from these and many other amazing teachers will be the core activity bringing 40 + workshops a day in drumming, dance and voice, intermingled with a wealth of open mic performances, spontaneous jams, indigenous ceremonies, fireside gatherings and creative youth activities, in addition to a spectacular roster of evening showcase performances. The youth area proffers a thrilling diversity of activities, from theatre, circus skills, metal work and trampolining to hip hop, rap, poetry and digital recording.

For those that want to relax and revive there’s a wellbeing zone, yoga, tai chi, other movement classes and the ever popular sauna.

Workshop highlights from Africa include: djembe drumming, Sabar dance and drum, traditional and contemporary African dances and songs. Other highlights include Flamenco dance and song, samba reggae, Toltec shamanism, Orisha song, tribal belly dance, derbouka drumming, Egyptian stick dancing, Klezmer dance and Jewish niggum singing. Workshops cater for all levels of experience, from beginners to advanced students.

‘What’s so magical about Doris is its amazing cultural diversity,’ says Siobhan Kierans, one of the festival’s founders. ‘People say they feel at home here, no matter what their cultural roots. The act of learning and sharing through music, dance and ceremony creates a feeling of belonging that you don’t get from passively consuming ‘’other cultures’’ at most world music events.’

The festival’s climax is a spectacular showcase on the Saturday night, when the many workshop groups come together to present what they’ve learnt in a series of vibrant performances.

‘ Doris creates peace and happiness by communing through music, dance and song,’ declared veteran African drummer Adesose Wallace winding up last year’s Sunday morning closing ceremony. ‘This is the future, one tribe.’

PRESS RELEASE

*May 2011*

*She Just Keeps FLO-ing *

Want a passionate poet and soulful singer to perform for you? Let the powerful talent of FLOetic Lara flow over you.

FLO's unique style is infused with jazz, soul, hip hop, reggae and gospel, combined in an energy-filled performance of spoken word and live music.

An independent and currently unsigned artist, FLOetic Lara launched her debut CD, ‘Jus Let It FLO…-Project # 1’, at a sold out concert summer 2009. This was followed by a six-week tour of UK, Norway and Southeast Asia, which included Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, and Bali. FLO then toured the UK causing a stir in the London music scene and continually growing her fan base through her potent live performances and presence on social networking sites. FLO was also invited to perform at the annual ‘AHW International Festival’ in Norway in the company of dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson.

Phase two of FLO’s recording projects was recently completed after being given the opportunity by T W Rhino, to record her first full album, with full live band, at Bob Marley’s legendary ‘Tuff Gong Studios’ in Kingston-Jamaica. FLO went down a storm in Jamaica, performing at the 10th anniversary of the ‘Calabash International Literature Festival’ and The Ocho Rios International Jazz Festival. Also appearing on the ‘Smile Jamaica’ TV Show -equivalent to GMTV here in London. FLO’s completed album entitled ‘For Lovers Of…’ is due for release June 5th 2011 at a guaranteed explosive launch concert at Plan B, Brixton, London.

FLO plans to release a ‘triple threat’ of projects later this year including a Jazz CD, a Spoken Word CD & a Collaborations CD.

Based in Brixton, London, FLO has performed her high-energy shows at Brixton Academy, The Jazz Café, The Royal Festival Hall and Hackney Empire, as well as entertaining audiences in America, Czechoslovakia, Tanzania and Italy.

FLOetic Lara has supported many artists including Omar and Don-E (both of whom produced music for the ‘Jus Let It FLO…’ CD), Jagwar Wright and Dwele.

Expelled from school at the age of 13 and having left home at age 12, FLO spent her teenage years in care homes. She was often told she would amount to nothing. FLOetic Lara now uses her own rich life experiences to influence her songs and poetry.

At age 17 FLO was appointed the UK Youth Ambassador because of her ability to "overcome adversity" and flown to the USA to shadow the then secretary of state Collin Powell and share her experiences with the American youth. She was also invited to write a poem, read & present it to Prince Philip at a special lunch at St. James Palace London.

FLO has been described as inspirational, empowering and a role model for young people.

The dancer develops the basic physical and interpretative skills required for Contemporary dance. An emphasis is placed on the precise relationship between body parts and the energy of performance. The class begins with a warm up. It continues with centre exercises and travelling phases before building physical and interpretative skills through a dance combination in which the dancer displays both freedom and control.

FEEDBACK33 TEACHER'S BIOGRAPHY
Akosua Boakye holds a degree in Dance Studies from Roehampton Institute, and a PGCE from Christ Church Canterbury University. Since 1997 she has worked as a freelance dance artist choreographing and delivering creative, African dance and Contemporary dance forms in primary, secondary schools and community settings. She has managed and delivered a range of African dance workshops for various organisations in and around the UK. In 2003 she began work as a dance lecture in at Kensington and Chelsea College (KCC) where she is now Head of Performing Arts. In the last 4 years Akosua has transformed the dance education curriculum at KCC to include the delivery and study of African dance alongside Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary and Contact Improv.

Akosua has worked extensively over the years in developing her style of Pan-African dance. Her approach fuses movement from a variety of African dance forms with modern choreographic structures.

‘Everyday I am excited and inspired by the architecture of dance and the possibilities it presents, and it is because of this that I continue to create and transform movement.’ – Akosua Boayke.
