FILM SCREENING: Cuba! Africa! Revolution! part 2

At the Hobgoblin Pub,
73 White Lion Street,
Islington,
London, N1
(PLEASE NOTE VENUE CHANGE)

SYNOPSIS: In January of 1961 independence fighter and Congo’s first Prime
Minister, Patrice Lumumba was assassinated. The Cuban revolutionary government
recognised this as part of imperialism’s drive to turn back the tide of
African independence. Shortly after, Cuba’s ‘African Odyssey’ began. The
necessary technical and military assistance socialist Cuba provided for
liberation movements Algeria, Guinea Bissau, Angola, Mozambique, Namibia, and
South Africa, made the difference between defeat and victory.

This documentary, produced for the BBC in April of 2007, has rare footage of
some of Africa’s most prominent revolutionaries and tracks Cuba’s heroic
and unselfish contribution to the fight against colonialism and racist
oppression in Africa.

Each screening is followed by an open discussion of the issues raised

Dwayne’s class is a fast paced Cuban technique class merging elements of la technica Cubana with his own unique contemporary flavour. The Cuban technique is loosely rooted in the Graham technique and through additional inclusions of undulations and spinal manipulations forces the dancer to master the shifting of weight through space. The class is highly physical with challenging exercises in the centre and travelling sequences that demand a sense of attack and musical dynamism. The class will culminate in a challenging movement sequence to end.
