The Afro-Latin Lounge

Dear all, Find below the latest cultural news from the Afro-Latin, African and Latin diasporas. ADAD is pleased to announce that the organisation has been included in Arts Council England's national portfolio for 2012-2015. We are grateful that at this difficult time for publicly funded organisations the Arts Council has chosen to continue to recognise and support the contribution of dance of the African Diaspora to the British cultural offer. ADAD has great ambitions for developing dance of the African Diaspora in the UK. Over the next few years, ADAD will continue to deliver a range of national initiatives including the Bloom Festival, the Re:Generations International conference and the Trailblazers professional development programme.

Hi Jeanette

IdeasTap are looking for 300 dancers for a once in a lifetime opportunity – to perform at the UEFA Champions League final at Wembley Stadium in May.

This global event will be broadcast to over 210 million people and is the largest televised event of the year.

Our chosen dancers will get the opportunity to work with Ashley Wallen, who has choreographed Kylie Minogue, Mariah Carey, The X Factor and the T-Mobile Liverpool Street advert – to name a few.

IdeasTap is an online arts organisation and funding body, providing unique opportunities for emerging creative talent.

For full details of Dance Wembley and to apply go to www.ideastap.com
We would be very grateful if you could pass this opportunity on to all dancers who would be interested. I’ve also attached a PDF poster for you to put up to promote the opportunity further.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you require further information.

Many thanks,
Lucy Glover

London get ready!! Diene 'Waaw Waaw' Sagna is coming back to the UK, fresh and energised from his homeland of Senegal and ready to put a spring back into our step with some incredible Sabar & Djembe dance training and choreographies.

Yaye Dib Sabar brings to you ~ Just Dance!!
This will be a time to focus on your movement, style and technique, relating this to the Djembe and Sabar rhythms.
There will be live drumming throughout!
...
Open to all levels, Diene will enable each student to develop their own potential; whether this be introducing these beautiful West African dances and culture to you or developing your understanding, studying and gaining a deeper appreciation for the style and feel of the movements, enabling your body to communicate with the drums with confidence, ease and skill.

In both the Sabar and Djembe dance workshops, Diene will allow some time to focus on the often challenging moment of 'soloing'; dancing in the drum circle enabling your body to express the rhythms with passion and joy. You will not be forced to dance solo (!!) however this is VERY important training for any student interested in African dance and therefore these workshops will give dance students the opportunity to concentrate on this element.

FYI ~

We will be running these workshops at SPACe on Falkirk Street, Hackney.
Great dance studio with wooden floor and mirrors as well as nice changing room facilities with showers and lockers.

Omar Puente
at Pizza Express Jazz Club Soho

Monday 14th March
Show Time 8:30pm / Doors Open 7:00pm

Violinist, Composer, Arranger, Producer, Educator Omar Puente is a classical violinist with a heart that beats with a Cuban rhythm, a soul that is African, and a home in West Yorkshire. His career has been as varied as his life. He began learning violin at five, and at the age of thirteen, he travelled alone to Havana to take up a scholarship.

The next few years were spent studying classical violin and learning all he could about Cuban music and jazz. After graduating, Omar played in Cuban bands such as Orquesta Enrique Jorrin (with Ruben Gonzalez), and Rubalcaba¹s Charanga Tipica de Concierto (with renowned Cuban bassist, Cachao). He studied classical music as a member of the National Symphony Orchestra while learning jazz from musicians like Chucho Valdes. Since coming to England Omar has taught Cuban music and jazz violin at Leeds College of Music and Trinity College of Music.

Wall Project, Presented by Rich Mix and Havana Club

Rich Mix and Havana Club the Authentic Cuban Rum are calling on amateur or professional artists to submit designs for a specially commissioned wall art project, taking place over the next twelve months at the Shoreditch cultural hotspot, Rich Mix.

The art competition includes three commissions launched by three live events, hosted in conjunction with the start of Rich Mix’s new seasons.

Artist Remi/Rough launched the Havana Club Wall Project with his interpretation and vision of the values that make Havana so unique. The celebrated urban artist was specially commissioned to design and paint an interior wall that runs the entire length of the Rich Mix events space.

Artists are invited to submit their entries to panel of experts, led by Remi/Rough, who will select two winning designs to feature on the Rich Mix interior wall throughout the year. The design must embody the unique and inspiring attitude that reflects the true values of the Cuban capital – humanity, spontaneity and creativity, this refreshing attitude highlighting the informality, passion and generosity of the people of Havana.

Design sketches must be submitted to Rich Mix (visualarts@richmix.org.uk) as a jpg by:
o March 21 with the winning wall design on show from May to August 2011; or
o July 2 with the winning wall design on show from September to December 2011.

The project celebrates Rich Mix and Havana Club’s shared ethos of inspired ingenuity for creativity while nurturing new and emerging talent.

For more information, visit Rich Mix http://www.richmix.org.uk/wallproject.htm - www.facebook.com/richmixlondone16la and Havana Club www.facebook.com/HavanaClubUK.

About Remi/Rough
To make the innocent and beautiful dark, to find soul in stark, geometric swashes - somewhere beneath the acrylic, emulsion and spray paint grins Remi/Rough. South London born and bred (circa 1971) Remi Morgan has been breaking boundaries and messing up heads for the past 26 years. Transcending the traditional and somewhat idealised vision of a graffiti writer, the celebrated artist is passionate and unforgiving in his creative progression.

About Rich Mix
Located in the heart of East London, Rich Mix offers live music, film, dance, theatre, spoken word, education, and a range of creative activities for people of all ages and all cultures. We are proud to be an organisation where all profits go back to support our education programme for young people, our community activities and to help us nurture new and emerging talent.

About Havana Club
Havana Club is the second largest international rum brand in Europe, and third largest worldwide. Key to Havana Club’s success is its authentic Cuban origin and the recognised quality of its rums, all of which are aged, hence the use of the word “Añejo” – aged - on the bottles.

About Pernod Ricard UK
Pernod Ricard UK is part of the Pernod Ricard Group, co-leader of the global wines and spirits industry. Globally, Pernod Ricard now represents 91 million cases of spirits and 25 million cases of wine, and owns 19 of the world’s top 100 brands.
