The Afro-Latin Lounge

Some Like it Hip Hop, written by ZooNation founder Kate Prince and Felix Harrison, is the company’s first full-length production since the award-winning West End smash hit, Into the Hoods.

With a nod to Billy Wilder’s much loved film and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, Some Like it Hip Hop is a comical tale of love, mistaken identity, cross-dressing and revolution; all played out in ZooNation’s trademark style of hip hop, comedy and physical theatre.

Directed by Kate Prince, with original music by Josh Cohen and DJ Walde, the all star cast includes Tommy Franzén (So You Think You Can Dance, Blaze, Goldberg) Lizzie Gough (So You Think You Can Dance, Blaze) and Teneisha Bonner (Into the Hoods, Insane in the Brain, StreetDance 3D, Shoes).

ZooNation Dance Company was founded in 2002 by Kate Prince. In 2006, the company premiered Into the Hoods, which went on to become the longest running dance show the West End has ever seen. In 2010 ZooNation became a Resident Company at Sadler’s Wells, and Kate Prince became an Associate Artist.

The Afro-Latin Lounge

Hi Y'all

Sorry for the group email..........As you may know we have recently started a new project Orchestra Bombo. This is a project we would like to grow and grow by bringing in dancers, singers and more horn players, not to mention setting up gigs etc...., but realistically we don’t have the manpower to administrate it.

We would also like to keep the Rumbas in Kings Cross going which include very affordable workshops but this is in danger of being dropped because we are unfunded and seriously understaffed.

So.....if you have an interest in these projects continuing and have the odd spare hour and would like to help these are some of the things you could do:

· Updating of social networking, spreading the word
· Documenting events with film & photography and uploading on to website/social network
· Setting up Google calendar for group members (Orchestra Bombo)
· On site help, collecting email addresses, taking money, overall help with running of event
· Updating newsletter and emails
· Contacting promoters for gigs or Rumba events

If you would like to chat in more detail about any of the above please give me a call on 07538682180.

Thanks for your support so far!

We had the vision of bringing high-quality and low cost dance opportunities to our home borough of Barking and Dagenham. We aim to produce innovative and exciting work which explores issues such as selfhood and social conformity. I want to take audiences on a journey through abstract, contemporary and hip hop dance that causes them to question and challenge both their own and society’s norms. I aspire to push the boundaries of the art form and be recognized for innovation and expressivity.

EVENT 2

The Colored Museum is a thought-provoking, satirical show that has
delighted and discomforted audiences since it was written by George C.
Wolfe in America in 1986.

Taking place in a cultural museum, the 11 living 'exhibits' explore
African-American identity in an exhibition of stereotypes.

Through characters like the pert and ever-smiling Miss Pat, airline
hostess for Celebrity Slaveship, and The Man, a successful businessman
who only wants to be Black at the weekend, Wolfe confronts history and
clichés with gutsy humour. By retiring these 11 stereotypical characters
and attitudes to a museum, he makes room for the future; for new stories
and ideas.

Provocative and seriously funny, The Colored Museum will stir your
emotions and leave you in stitches.

The Story Of Lovers Rock + Director's Q&A
Sunday 23rd October, 2011; 3.30pm
Watershed, Bristol
Menelik Shabazz, director of the award-winning 1981 film Burning An Illusion and a true pioneer of black British cinema, makes a welcome return to film with this joyous documentary. Dubbed 'romantic reggae', this uniquely black British sound came out of the late 70s and 80s against riots, racial tension and sound systems. Combining live performance, comedy, dance, interviews (Maxi Priest, UB40, Gregory Isaacs, Janet Kay, Tippa Irie and others) and archive footage, this evocative film sheds light on the music and a forgotten period of British social and political history.

Origins of black history month in the UK

Idrissa Camara:
An outstanding dance artist and musician from Guinea Conakry. He has been principle choreographer with some of the leading dance and music companies in West Africa such as Ballets Africains in Ziguinchor and Dakar, and the Ballet Bougarabou. Since arriving in the UK he’s performed widely with West African ensembles as well as touring with the intercultural, intergenerational carnival show "Dragon" and now with a lead role in the fabulous "Magick". With the support of the Arts Council and ADAD he founded Ballet Nimba. Idrissa is a real joy to watch and an inspiration for many.As a teacher, his knowledge of Guinean dance is unrivalled, and in his classes, music and song and explanation of the dance's origin, all help to accelerate the students' learning.

Awa Goudiaby:
Awa Goudiaby is from Ziguinchor, Casamance. She grew up in Dakar and became part of Ballet Fambody, the second ballet of the Ballet National de Senegal. She was picked as a dancer for AfrikaAfrika! and came to tour around Europe for several years. She now lives in the UK and teaches and performs regularly around the country. You may have seen her spectacular performances at various events including African Beats Camp, African Drum Village, or with Ballet Nimba. Her graceful and cheeky style of dance and clear and confident teaching manner never fails to impress.

Vanessa Guevara:
Vanessa grew up studying Ballet, contemporary, Jazz and other forms of dance, but after being introduced to African dance decided to specialize in this exciting, colourful form of dance; a decision that would take her all over the world. After living in Africa, training with some of the most important African Dance teachers and choreographers, Vanessa went on to further her studies in New York and San Francisco. As well as dancing with Ballet Nimba she dances with Alesanrda Seutin's fantastic Vocab Dance.
